A NEW RESEARCH PROJECT AT THE CENTER: JEWS AND THE HISTORY OF SHIPOWNING AND SHIP OPERATION
The project is headed by Nadav Kashtan, a specialist in the History and Ancient Civilizations of the Mediterranean, and will be carried out under the auspices of the Center for Maritime Studies. Its main objectives are to investigate Jewish involvement in maritime activities from Biblical times to the present day. A 'Jewish Ship Register' paralleling the 'Lloyd's Register' will be compiled, listing details of Jewish owned ships from antiquity to modern times. In addition, the research aims to show the impact of the sea on Jewish thought and history, while detailing the Jewish contribution to the Ômaritime worldÕ.
This project has been made possible through the generous support of the Samson Trust of the Schalit family, Caesarea, Israel.
